Poplars Nursing Home

About Us

With a strong emphasis on family, Poplars Nursing Home continues to build on its established reputation as a benchmark for care in the heart of the Midlands. The home, with 37 beds, is family-run but enjoys the visionary leadership of a corporate, with a major £3. 5m investment currently being undertaken on site. Culturally sensitive, Poplars endeavors to embrace personal faith and dietary preferences within its gold standard of individualised nursing excellence. Central to its care ethos is a determination to partner best clinical outcomes and dignity with liberal dispensations of kindness, laughter and happiness. Most important is fostering a sense of home and belonging for those who live with us. Residents are encouraged to partake in weekly stimulation exercise activities, including reminiscence therapy, quizzes, sing-songs and other professional music entertainment. Feedback is always welcome. An open door policy exists for visitors and for those who wish to view the home for the possible admission of loved-ones. No appointments are necessary and those wishing to view are positively encouraged to ‘drop in’ unannounced. A strong nursing and care support team is led by former hospital Nursing Sister and nursing director Gill Williams. Under her management the home has built excellent relationships with social workers, Care Quality Commission inspectors and local authority commissioning officers. Poplars caters for both those with high dependency and general nursing needs and can offer, in partnership with the home’s excellent GP and relatives, the approved Sandwell Supportive Care Pathway for end of life.

Aims and objectives Poplars provides residential, bespoke nursing and personal care for those whose needs cannot be met in the community. Registered providers of the care, Dr Narinder Narhlya and wife Sandeep Sonia Shehmar, take a hands-on approach in overseeing the secure and happy environment in the home, which trades under Poplars Support & Care Services Ltd. Day to day clinical management is provided by Gill Williams, who fosters an holistic approach to residents' medical, pyschological, social and spiritual wellbeing. Central to the ethos of care is a personalisation agenda where residents, their families and other agencies are encouraged to contribute to care planning. Regular reviews are held and may become more frequent as medical conditions dictate. Autonomy is encouraged along with social engagement with staff and fellow residents. For those who are well enough, activities, hobbies and entertainment programmes are provided. Service users and their relatives are encouraged to raise any concerns they have about staff, their care or other dissatisfactions involving the home. Any complaints are dealt with speedily by the manager under a structured company complaints policy. Staffing levels are in line with Care Quality Commission guidelines and appropriate, regular ongoing training of support staff and nurses is delivered through industry-approved courses.

Establishment: We are a family-run company with strong family values that are central to the care model we embrace. Those who choose to make Poplars their home are effectively adopted as part of our extended family responsibilities. Their wellbeing is paramount as we continue to deliver outcomes driven by compassion and an unyielding passion for caring. Our directors, Mr Roshan Dass, Mrs Sandeep Shehmar and Dr Narinder Narhlya, take a hands-on approach to overseeing the day-to-day running of the home. There is a keen eye to detail in ensuring that the atmosphere of the home remains a friendly one – replicating as much as possible the kindness, consideration and humour found in a healthy family environment. Our vision is simple: To set a benchmark in care that builds upon the excellent reputation of Poplars and to expand to make our business 'future proof'. Everything we do to enhance the quality of the lives of our residents is driven by a desire to better their life experience, no matter how medically challenging that can be. Training and development of staff is overseen by Mrs Shehmar and Dr Narhlya manages business finance and clinical development. The New Poplars building project, which will more than double the footprint of the home, is being site managed by Mr Dass. While having big plans for the long-term future, we believe we remain sufficiently flexible to respond quickly to emerging changes in the governance of care while still holding close a family focus for Poplars. We are not an impersonal corporate and pride ourselves on our transparent approach. Our home is always open during daylight hours for people to drop in unannounced to check out the kind of care we give. We have nothing to hide and intend for our services to remain that way as we develop capacity. Manager Gill Williams, who has overseen care at Poplars since 2002 demands exceptional standards and the delivery of a secure framework of loving caring that aims to exceed the expectations of residents and their loved-ones. Registered General Nurse Gill has a strong management background in the private sector and was a ward Sister at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham, before leaving the NHS in 1992. Previous to her role at Poplars she held a private sector nursing director's position and worked as a matron and care manager in other residential care settings. She is committed to a life-long learning career path and regularly attends training sessions to ensure the home remains on the cutting edge in its approach to residential nursing and end of life care. Maria Beddow looks after the daily administration of the Poplars Nursing Home and is the PA for Gill Williams.
